Being out at first light in the Mosquito Lagoon is the key right now for flyfishing. Midday, water temps are to hot. Seeing alot of fish midday, just getting them to eat is the tricky part. Had a good trip with client Bill Smith, going 4 for 6 on fly by 9:30 a.m. Fish were backing and tailing when water levels were right. Later in the week water levels dropped and fish were not as active, although Gary was able to release 2 nice fish.

Flyfishing for redfish this summer remains good. Even with the water temps being warm, flyfishing for redfish has been consistant.

Flyfishing for redfish this summer remains good. Even with the water temps being warm, flyfishing for redfish has been consistant. Tailing and backing fish have been the norm. The key is to get out early and target shallow water. If the lagoons recieve some rain, the fish stay more active longer due to the rain cooling the water. Crab and shrimp patterns, as always have been eaten consistently. If they refuse to eat, try switching to a bait fish pattern. Soon we will be able to target large redfish with the fly. When and where is the mystery.

As well as the temperature, the summer redfishing for larger reds has heated up. If conditions remain stable, anglers are getting numerous shots at schools of redfish. Some days they are more forgiving then others, but persistance usually pays off. The fishing for the larger redfish is only going to get better. Soon instead of bait, they will be keyed up on top water plugs and other artificials. Nothing is more exciting then seeing a 20 lb redfish trying to eat a top water plug.

Sightfishing for redfish and seatrout on mosquito lagoon has been above average. Water has remained generally clear and fish are beginning to cruise some shorelines. Larger seatrout have been seen following bait schools and have been receptive to a well placed fly or bait. Larger redfish are beginning to get in summer patterns. The larger redfish usually prefer live bait, but will take a fly or lure on occasions. Baby and larger Tarpon will start showing up in greater numbers in Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River
